How does the Networkmonitor "test" work exactly?

I am getting some really weird results with this connections-test you can do in the network monitor. On my 1 Gbit cable connection it says I got 200 connections max, when I do the same test via tethering over my phone (!) I get 1600 connections max and on my 10 Gbit VPS I get 15 (!!!) fifteen connections max, which can't be true because nothing would then work.

So this test isn't really reliable, is there a better way to test your maximum connections on your internet?
